Factors that generate corrosion in industrial assets

Share Post

Industrial machinery, equipment and the surfaces of structures such as industrial buildings are indispensable elements for carrying out production processes. With the help of industrial coatings, damage to them due to factors such as corrosion can be prevented.

Corrosion is a natural phenomenon, the product of the oxidation of metals, which is generated by the presence of air and water in the environment. This chemical reaction is considered one of the most common damages within the industries because machinery and equipment are usually a constant risk due to the different factors that generate it. The various factors include:

High temperatures

The high concentration of heat in industrial plants causes high temperatures in the environment where the assets are located, increasing the speed of deterioration that generates the corrosive process.

Dissolved salts in the environment

Sectors such as the marine work with structures near the sea, whose atmosphere contains dissolved salts, which, combined with water, air and humidity, increase the risk of corrosion of the assets.

High oxygen concentration

Air is one of the leading causes of this natural phenomenon. There is machinery whose design or failures in its structure present cavities with a high oxygen concentration, causing the corrosive phenomenon’s appearance.

Industrial contamination

Spillage of chemical products, handling of acid solutions or the expulsion of sulfur dioxide can considerably affect the condition of industrial assets, as these factors facilitate the generation of corrosion.

Stopping the factors that produce this chemical reaction is possible as long as the type of corrosion faced is identified and the ideal solution is chosen among the existing industrial coatings.

Types of corrosion

The cause of corrosion can be classified into three groups, whose difference lies in the way it is formed in the industrial part:

– Uniform: this type of reaction occurs homogeneously over the entire surface of the material. Although this is the most damaging to the asset, it is possible to prevent and control it with industrial coatings to avoid total deterioration.

– Localized: this occurs in specific areas of the asset. The appearance will depend on the properties of the material, its structure and the conditions of the environment to which it is subjected. Some examples of this type of corrosion are: galvanic, cracking, and microbiological, among others.

– Generated by a physical attribute: in this case, the physical characteristic or movement is the factor that gives way to the corrosive process, i.e. when the asset faces conditions such as pressure, tension, and stress, among others.

Use of industrial coatings

There are solutions both to prevent damage to industrial assets and extend the surface’s life against corrosion. Some of these solutions include:

– Acquire stainless products: it is recommended to use materials such as aluminium or stainless steel for the construction or use of machinery, especially for outdoor processes.

– Keep metal surfaces dry: when exposed to rain or frequent washing of the materials, it is recommended to dry them immediately to avoid the onset of the oxidation process.

– Avoid placing assets in humid areas: it is essential to have process areas free of humidity to avoid the consequences of this condition, one of them being the wear of the assets.

– Use industrial coatings: resistant barriers such as industrial coatings work as a protective element to keep assets in optimal conditions and avoid the generation of wear phenomena.

ndustrial coatings have become popular in industries as a practical solution with durability and resistance benefits.

In addition, industrial coatings have incredible versatility to protect various types of items needed to carry out the processes of industries, ranging from a machine to metal parts.

PAXCON by LINE-X® is one of the industrial coatings that offer multiple protection solutions to industries. Its performance goes beyond being an anti-corrosion product since it also faces other complex challenges, such as wear.

Undoubtedly, solutions beyond the traditional are needed to efficiently prevent corrosion, such as the technology and innovation that industrial coatings can offer.
